PROJECTS

UNAPD is currently (2009) running the following projects:

Uganda Brain Injury Support Project (UBSIP)

brain injury project - unapd This is a two-year project that started in 2007 and will end in 2009. It is a pilot project aiming at increasing awareness on the rights of People with Acquired Brain Injury (PWABIs) and the challenges of Brain Injury to the central and local government, civil society and local communities in Kampala District. It is aimed at making positive interventional decisions on prevention of Brain Injury and rehabilitation of PWABIs. UBISP focuses on facilitating and empowering community Self-Help Groups, as the foundation for community action on issues of PWABIs, who in turn shall spearhead community advocacy and linkage with various social service providers. The experiences and practices generated shall be shared with other development stakeholders as well as using them to spread out the project to a wider coverage.
The project is sponsored by the Danish Brain Injury Association (DBIA).

Capacity Building and Accessibility Project

accessibility project - unapd The two-year project aims at building the capacity and empowering Persons with Physical Disabilities (PWPDs), UNAPD Board and staff in areas of organizational development and management, creating accessibility awareness and advocacy through sensitization and training. PWPDs lack knowledge in areas of lobbying, fundraising and advocacy. So the project seeks to develop more expertise in the area of accessibility, to be able to provide concrete advice to stakeholders, on, for example, building standards to ensure accessibility. Through this project, UNAPD has developed Accessibility Standards that have to be followed when constructing physical facilities that are accessible to PWDs. The project that runs up to 2010 is implemented in five sub-counties in each of the eight districts of Kampala, Wakiso, Kapchorwa, Soroti, Masindi, Hoima, Nebbi and Yumbe. It is supported by Danish Handicap Forbund (DHF), a Danish Association for the Physically Disabled.

The Wings Project

The project supports the development of four wings - Youth, Women's, Persons with Rheumatism and Polio Survivors' Wings - within UNAPD, and to disseminate information and research about polio survivors and persons with rheumatism. The project promotes the participation of the wings in UNAPD activities to strengthen the organisation's advocacy initiatives as well as promoting the Wings' involvement in UNAPD structures. To support information activities, a working group for Polio Survivors was formed to create awareness on post-polio syndrome. Each group has access to a Trust Fund to facilitate mini projects of the Wings. The two-year project that runs up to 2010 is sponsored by Danish Handicap Forbund (DHF).

Disability Rights Awareness Project

This is a one-year (2009) tripartite project implemented by three Disabled People's Organisations: Uganda National Action on Physical Disability; Mental Health Uganda; and National Association of the Deaf Blind. The project seeks to improve the quality of life and enjoyment of disability rights among Persons with Mental Disabilities, Persons with Physical Disabilities and the Deaf-Blind (DB) in 6 districts of Uganda by 2010. The projects specifically aims at promoting awareness of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (that Uganda ratified in 2008), and to increase the capacity of PWDs to advocate for their rights basing on the UN Convention on the rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Project is sponsored by TIDES Foundation through the Disability Rights Fund. The project was born out of the PWDs need to clearly understand the Convention and how best to apply its provisions in addressing their needs and challenges.

Labour Market Project

The two-year project aims to promote a positive employment environment of PWD's at local level through advocacy, awareness-raising and linking PWDs to potential employers. The project is sponsored by the Danish Brain Injury Association. The pilot project that started in 2009 is implemented in Makindye and Kawempe divisions in Kampala District. Through the project, a data-base about PWDs job skills, level of qualification and the kind of jobs the can do, among others, will be created. The project will train PWDs in skills like CV writing, how you can pass a job interview, among others. Employers who are interested in giving jobs to PWDs will get an opportunity to chose from the available list at UNAPD.

HIV/AIDS Project

UNAPD has successfully implemented Phase I and II of this project in partnership with the National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda (NUDIPU). The project promotes HIV/AIDS and Sexual Reproductive Health among Persons with Physical Disabilities.

Microfinance Project

This project seeks to incorporate Persons with Physical Disabilities in the CARE Uganda's Village Saving and Loan Associations in the districts of Soroti and Nebbi. The project's major aim is to improve the livelihoods of Persons with Physical Disabilities through accessing loans to enable them carry out productive activities. The project is implemented in partnership with CARE Uganda, a non-government organization, UNAPD and the National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda.
